Dewinterizing Your Powersports Vehicle: 7 Easy Steps

Posted by Melanie Johnson on Feb 28, 2023

Spring is just around the corner, and it's time to bring your ATV, UTV, motorcycle, or boat out of hibernation. Before hitting the trails or water, follow these 7 essential steps to dewinterizing your vehicle and ensure it’s ready for action.

Start by thoroughly inspecting your vehicle for any signs of damage or wear that may have occurred during storage. Look for cracks in hoses, leaks, or corrosion on metal parts. Clean the exterior and components, paying special attention to the engine, suspension, and brake system.

During the winter, small animals may have found a cozy spot in your vehicle. Check all nooks and crannies, including exhaust outlets, airboxes, and under seats, for nests or chewed wires. Remove any debris and make sure your vehicle is critter-free.

Batteries can lose charge over time, especially in cold conditions. Check the battery's voltage and recharge it if necessary. If the battery is old or unable to hold a charge, consider replacing it to avoid issues down the road.

Ensure all fluids, including oil, coolant, brake fluid, and transmission fluid, are at the correct levels. Even if the mileage doesn't warrant a change, consider refreshing these fluids to ensure optimal performance. In addition, replace any fluid that looks dirty or degraded.

Check your air filters for dirt and debris. Clean or replace them as needed to ensure your engine gets the clean air it needs. As a result, properly maintained air filters will enhance performance and prolong the life of your engine.

Inspect your tires for any cracks, flat spots, or signs of aging that could have occurred during the winter. Cold temperatures can cause rubber to become brittle, so replace any damaged tires. Also, check the condition of other rubber components like seals and gaskets.

If you used Powersport fuel system stabilizer before storage, your fuel should be good to go. Otherwise, consider draining the old fuel and replacing it with fresh gas. Inspect the fuel tank, lines, and filters for any signs of damage or contamination. Clean or replace filters as needed to ensure smooth operation.
