atv fuel filter

Snowmobiling gets a lot of attention this time of year. But while a good half of the country is covered in snow, the rest of the nation just needs to put on an extra jacket. That said, the winter weather won't be slowing a lot of folks down when it comes to riding their ATVs.

Still, riding through the summer dirt and riding through sleet are two completely different situations. You need to make sure your ATV is ready for the weather before slapping on a pair of gloves and heading out into the cold.

Here are four things you can do to keep your ATV riding smoothly through the winter season:

  1. Put your snow tires on. Your car isn't the only thing that needs snow tires during the winter season. Snow tires give your ATV extra traction so you can drive through slush, icy patches, or snow without slipping and sliding all over the road or trail.

  2. Change your oil. Your oil's viscosity matters a lot during the winter. This is because extreme temperatures can make your oil thicker and harder to pump through your fuel system. Consider using a synthetic oil during the winter season. Synthetics don't change as dramatically in cold weather.

  3. Replace your fuel filter. If your ATV is having problems pumping your new synthetic oil, there could be an issue with your fuel filter or fuel pump. Replace your fuel filter to help your fuel get to where it needs to go so you can too.

  4. Keep a winch on hand. It's always a good idea to keep a winch on hand, but especially during the winter months. If you get stuck in deeper snow or mud, you can hook up a winch to a tree and pull yourself out.

Need a replacement ATV fuel filter?

If you love to ride your ATV year-round, snow or shine, you're definitely not alone. The demand for sport ATVs in just 2016 was as high as 180,000 units.

With demand that high, you don't store your ATV away just because it's cold. But you do need to make sure it stays in great shape.
